A brief history of glass painting

Originally from Germany, glass painting was initially only found in churches. The first designs were abstract and included many pieces of colored glass. Later in the Middle Ages, with the improvement and development of artists’ skills, the paintings on the windows became larger and more elaborate. In the 16th century, the emergence of special enamel pigments marked the beginning of the type of glass painting we know today.

Today, artists working with glass can choose from many water and oil paints and a multitude of tools. Not only that, but they choose to draw on much more than flat windows, and their subjects transcend religious symbolism. Contemporary glass painters transform three-dimensional objects like wine glasses and other items into beautiful decorative works that include all kinds of patterns.

What type of paint to choose for painting on glass ?

Many types of paint will adhere to glass for a short period of time, but once they start to really dry out, they will immediately discolor, chip or peel. So what kind of paint will stick to the glass? The best types of paint to use are paints specially formulated for use on glass. The most common types are enamels and acrylic paints. Each with its own qualities, depending on several things. There’s even an acrylic enamel blend that gives you the best of both worlds. The main difference between enamel paints and acrylics is their opacity or transparency. The enamel paint is solid in color, and the acrylic paint is very transparent. For solid color paint, such as on a coffee mug with a solid color background, opt for enamel. If the project is on transparent glass and a stained glass effect is desired, acrylic will be the best bet.

Acrylic paint adheres to the surface of the glass and is therefore ideal for windows and mirrors

Painting on wine glass and the steps to follow

We present here a variant to customize a glass of wine. You will need:

  • acrylic paint
  • glasses by choice
  • brushes, lollipop sticks, toothpicks
  • rubbing alcohol

Instructions :

  1. Be sure to clean the glasses well with rubbing alcohol, otherwise dust or dirt will chip the paint.
  2. Now it’s time to paint. You can buy as many colors as you want or mix colors. Using other tools, sprinkle the paint on all the wine glasses. Start at the bottom of the glasses and work your way down the sides. On the pattern side, we chose the polka dots because they are easier, but if you have the talent for drawing, you could create other designs..
  3. Place the glasses on a baking sheet. Then put it in a cold oven. Turn the oven on to 180 ° C. When preheated, set a timer for 30 minutes.
  4. Turn off the oven after 30 minutes, but do not open it! If cold air enters it, the glasses could explode. Let glasses cool completely (preferably overnight). The next day you can remove them from the oven.
  5. Finally, let the glasses dry for at least three days. Wash, and voila !

All you have to do is fill them with your favorite drinks

Here is another variant to create a false stained glass window, also called a “suncatcher”. This time around you will need more materials, but it will definitely create a “wow” effect. You must obtain:

  • pourable epoxy resin
  • photo frame with removable glass
  • outline print design
  • 3d puff painting
  • transparent dye and opaque pigments
  • mixing cups and mixing sticks

Instructions :

  1. Start with the design of your faux stained glass window. You can draw one yourself or find some models. Print the design in the same size as the piece of glass you choose to work with.
  2. Remove the glass from the frame and make sure it is nice and clean. Place your design under the glass and trace it using 3D paint on the top of the glass. Let the paint dry for at least 4 hours before proceeding to the next step.
  3. Once the puff paint is dry, you can mix your epoxy knowing that this project requires very small amounts. Mix about 50 grams of each color depending on the size to be covered. Carefully follow the instructions on the packaging. Combine equal parts resin and hardener and stir for 2 minutes. Then pour the epoxy into a clean cup and mix for an additional minute.
  4. Once you are done mixing the epoxy, add several drops of pigments or dyes and stir until the mixture is combined. Use immediately after mixing.
  5. Start by painting the background color and let it sit for a few hours. If you try to do it all at the same time, the colors will blend together. Let each color dry for a few hours before moving on to the next.
  6. As soon as you have all the finished colors and the stained glass is filled, let it dry overnight. Then all you have to do is place it back into the frame..
